The East Tennessee Regional Health Department now says that a recent outbreak of Hepatitis A -- including an eighteenth case confirmed today --did not start in a restaurant. In fact, some of the cases may not be connected at all.

Last weekend, health officials interviewed nearly 100 people, including food service employees and individuals who tested positive for Hepatitis A.

The interviews suggest that there was no single source for the outbreak, but that poor hygiene likely played a role in its spread in Campbell, Scott and Anderson Counties.

More than 1,000 people who ate at the Waffle House in Clinton received shots last week to prevent Hepatitis after one employee at that restaurant tested positive for the virus. However, the Clinton Waffle House was never considered a source for the outbreak.

Hepatitis A symptoms include mild fever, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, dark urine and jaundice. It can be spread by poor hygiene and being in contact with someone who has the disease.

Most victims survive.
